Dynamic Chemistry: Donald Glover and Maya Erskine Shine in ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ Spy Series Review

Prime Video’s latest show, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, offers an exciting new take on the 2005 hit movie featuring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

A new version of the famous 2005 spy movie, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which introduced Brangelina to the world, is in the works.

Initially, the idea didn’t seem quite right, especially considering the delays and major casting changes. Phoebe Waller-Bridge from Fleabag was first set to star alongside Donald Glover, but she was later replaced by Maya Erskine. With so many changes, one might think it’s not a good sign. However, the new Prime Video series, co-created by Glover and Francesca Sloane, turned out to be unexpectedly good – even better than the 2005 movie.

It’s a refreshing and charming update to a familiar storyline.

Is it functional?

From the cleverly crafted second episode onward, when John (Donald Glover) and Jane (Maya Erskine) share their first kiss in a truly bizarre moment midway through their assignment, it’s clear how this show deviates from expectations.

While the 2005 film dazzled with action, the focus was mainly on the tension between the two characters, prioritizing action and aggression over their evolving relationship.

In this new television series, there’s more room to explore. The creators find a dynamic alternative to action sequences by focusing on the characters themselves, delving into their details and revealing more with each new mission.

Additionally, the series benefits from terrific cameos by Paul Dano, Sharon Horgan, Michaela Coel, and Sarah Paulson, adding to its charm.

The introduction is quite clever – the original Smiths die on a mission, so a quick replacement is arranged.

Glover and Erskine step in as a duo, communicating through a computer that assigns them their next job.

This quirky pair exudes nervous energy and charm, with each episode bringing a new assignment that adds depth to their characters.

These are real-world spies who make mistakes and have each other’s backs.

The focus is on the characters, and the missions unfold from their shared, intimate spaces, blending the (darkly funny) personal with the (tactically) professional aspects.

“Let’s make a certain amount of money that we both feel good about, and then we can part our ways,” Jane suggests at the beginning, to which John cheekily agrees. We all know things don’t work out that smoothly.

Each episode is crafted with a patient, understated focus on contemporary details. David Fleming’s remarkable score enhances the mood as director Hiro Murai skillfully transitions between slow build-ups and climactic moments.

The passage of time is evident in the subtle ways they operate and trust, navigating each new mission like seasoned professionals.

The nervous energy of their early days is long gone. Sometimes deliberately slow, other times ramping up intrigue with breathtaking precision and clarity.

It’s a spy action-thriller, a character study, and an insightful commentary on governance all in one.

Glover and Erskine’s seamless chemistry is essential to the show, adding tension in the final episodes.

Glover exudes confidence in revealing his attraction, while Erskine shines as the impassive yet warm counterpart.

Together, they make every moment of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” a consistently delightful experience. Don’t miss it.
